I am thinking of putting true duals w/ no mufflers on my truck, but I have heard that back pressure might become an issue. I talked to a service man at the dealership where I bought the truck at and he said it should be no problem as long as I leave the catalytic converters alone.
AGREED with your service man...I have "true duals" on my 5.4L! I left cats alone...just as he said! Backpressure should never be a prob IMO with vehicles these days, especially if you leave your cats. Maybe be a prob if your running true straight pipes on an old engine thats been worn.
Well thats a question of opinion, haha! I think it sounds good. Ive got 3" stainless tips, nice low rumble on acceleration, then levels out once you shift into overdrive! Im one of those that DOES NOT like the screamin loud sound of "complete" straight pipes or glass packs. Therefore, with that said...I think my truck sounds great with its deep sound.
stang302 are how are your 3" pipes ran? I just bought a new 05' for my husband. He wants duals on them with 3" but I called a muffler shop who told me there was no way I could put 3" out the back due to the spare and something else. Wondering if I should call someone else or this guy is right.
I don't particularly care for any un-mufflered vehicle, especially the 3v F150....IMO, they sound like.....well, you get the picture.
As far as pipe size goes, any thing over 2.5'' really affects the exhaust systems ablility to "scavange" exhaust gases from the motor. You could run 2.5" pipes, and then bigger tips, but even they will also affect the scavanging as well.
As the exhaust gasses travel through your exhaust system and cool down (i.e. contract) they help to create a vaccum that helps to pull more ehaust gasses out of the combustion chamber (remember hot air expands and contracts when it cools). If you increase the diameter of the pipes too much, these gases lose their ability to "draw" and flow will actually get worse.
TexasArmyFamily and Superrangerman2002...I have the original 2.5" exhaust pipe all the way back uniform, like original...then goes to 3" stainless tips straight out the rear. Therefore, nothing would affect the exhaust gasses. I have this on an 2002 5.4L and a buddy of mine has the same on his 2004. I didnt have just a muffler shop do the work, its a guy that runs an exhuast shop business at his home and I guess thats how its "custom." He does all his own pipe bending etc, nothing was pre-fabbed. I watched him do my 2002, no problems or obstacles really, looks great under the truck...the 2004 Im not sure.
I didn't mean to come across as insinuating that you had a full 3" system. Most people actually do run the 2.5" cat backs because it would be silly to run 3'' or more off a 2.5'' cat. This is how 'scavaging" would be affected.
I too have a cat back DIDO (dual in dual out) or true dual exhaust that was fabbed up by a exhaust shop using a Flowmaster 50 muffler, 2.5" S.S. pipes, and 3" magnaflow tips.
run two flowmaster 40 series and have it coming straight out the back. They look so nice..It kind of seems like a Dodge thing to do, but I love the look
Any additional opinons? I had a 02 with a 5.4 and installed a flowmaster super 40 and although it sounded very clean it was too quite. I purchased a 05 over the weekend and am considering straight piping this one. I realize this is a matter of opinion, but it won't be obnoxiously loud will it??
NO IT WONT...but leave the cats ON. From cats back go 2.5" (stock size i think) then out to 3" tips, my opinion...it will sound good! Im with you...I dont like the annoying loudness out of some of these exhaust!
