97 Econoline with the double side middle door. The latch on the top of the door that attaches to the van, is that top latch adjustable for tension, in the door? I have adjusted the mount bolted to the van as far as it will go. It does not seem to have that posi lock engagement where it is either open or locked, such as you have on a drivers door or a car trunk lid. If the latch does need to be replaced, does the door need to be taken apart, or can it be done from the top as is? Thanks!
No adjustment in the door. You will probably have to replace the latch. Some of those come with upper and lower latch and handle remote control assembly with cables all in one package, some with one latch and the remote control. (Ford calls the mechanical lever which controls the latches which also includes the handle a remote control). They are all serviced inside the door.
After putting up with this door rattle for six months, I finally got the problem with door latch fixed. It turns out, the adjustment for this latch works in reverse of what you might think. That being, when the door will not lock completely in the closed position, you move the striker assembly closer to the door (away from the vehicle). Made no sense at first to do this, but after checking other doors that did close properly, I noticed the striker was much further out than you would have guessed it should be. There were some other problems with door panel mounting hardware, inside the door panels that were never installed right from the factory, which have been repaired as well. If I could only figure out all the wind noise at the drivers door, I would be pretty happy with how this all turned out...... with the only exception being the unusual oil consumption with this motor.
