Should I convert my '87 F150 from R12 to R134a? If so what do you think the cost would be? Would it be cheaper for me to do it or a shop? If I did it where could I find the instructions online?
If you want it done right, have a local A/C shop do it. You can do it on the cheap by buying one of those kits that Autozone and everyone else carries but how well it will cool and how long your compressor will last will be questionable.
Probably cheaper to use Freeze12 or some other compatible R12 replacement. That's what I did.
Buy the Kit, and a new accumulator.
I'm assuming your springlock fittings are seeping the old R12 out and that is why you are needing to retrofit.
Replace the springs and orings on the leaky parts, add the proper amount of oil, NONE EXTRA, exacuate and recharge with 80% of what the R12 charge was.
IE: R12 @ 48 oz
IE: R134a @ 38 oz
I believe you can get individual removable tools. When you get ready to use the tool take some carb cleaner and spray the fitting around the spring and work it slowly, the tool will soon slide right into the spring and the fitting will easily come apart.
