I have looked thru the sticky thread for casting numbers and found myself confused. I wanted to know the size of this block and where it came from. I found that it is from a 69 torino, but what is it? This is the numbers C90E-6015-C can anyone help? The only number that came close to matching is in the sticky but has a "B" at the end of the C90E.
Well, the thing about casting numbers is that they only tell us the car line that the block was originally designed for and the change level (not that I've found much info on deciphering the change level numbers.)
So you already know that C9 is for 1969, O is for the Fairlane/Torino and E is for the Engine department of engineering. 6015 is the basic number for an engine block and C is the 3rd change level. (Whatever that means) But just because a block was designed for the Fairlane/Torino doesn't mean those were the only cars that block was installed in.
The casting info says that a C9OE-B is a 351W, so I would presume that your block is a 302. Is it a bare block, or is the engine complete? How much do you know about the engine, or block at this point?
It is a complete engine installed in my 82 truck(not original motor) The guy i bought it from says it was a 302. I have a 2barrel intake on it now. I bought a used 302 4 barrel performer intake for it and the width measure is the same as the one that is installed on the motor. The main reason i wanted to decode the motor is to see what size and specs of the cam was. I may have to upgrade the cam to match the induction/fuel size.
A stock 302 with a stock 2bbl intake most likely still has a stock cam, pretty mild back in '69. You might as well plan on upgrading to a better cam/lifters anyway, and go with a doubler-roller timing set while you're in there.
Take a look at the offerings from Edelbrock and you can find something for low RPM grunt that would be good for a heavy truck and that you can match to that intake.
There's another place to look for info on your engine however. Since you still have the 2bbl intake on there, you might still have the engine id tag, a small aluminum tag attached to the intake underneath the coil, using one of the coil mounting bolts. If it's still there, that tag does have the info on the original application of that particular engine. (You'll still need to decode it, however.)
Well, the disclaimer at the top of the page does say, "No guarrantee (sic) of accuracy or completeness."
I have noticed this with other casting info charts, that there seems to be a lot of data missing. And they all seem to stop at about 1980 or so.
As I said earlier, the info about the change level seems to be a bit sketchy. I just found something that says that "C" in the change level denotes a 351C-4bbl. It sure doesn't sound like that's what you have.
Where on the block is the numbers located? Mines covered in gunk now so can't see anything yet. The guy I got it from said it's a '67 302. The number on the intake is: C 8AE-9425-B A and the tag on the valve cover is: C 8AE-9C485-B. The C8 means at least the intake and covers are a '68 correct? So now I want to id the block. Thanks for your time.
The block casting number and date code are located on the bottom passenger side of the block. just above (if looking up from the bottom) the starter. In many cases you'll need to remove the starter to read them clearly.
