Question Gear Change!

Well, I committed and changed front and rear from 3.73 to 4.56. I went through 4Wheelparts and bought Genuine Gear (crossing fingers). Driveline shop has great rep. so I don't have too much of a concern that it wasn't done correctly but here's a question - with the stock 3.73s the rearend was virtually silent; now with the new setup, the ring/pinions whine pretty good and at 70 I'm taching at 2450 rpm. Is this typically what I should be expecting? BTW, I have 35x14.50x16.5 tires/rims installed w/6" Superlift.

Thanks for your comments! Bill

Bill, are you doing a lot of towing? 4.56s are super steep for 35s? I have 4.30s, but I swaped my whole rear end, hence no noise. I will tell you this, my rock crawler had super high gears and the rear and front end would whine, but I was 140 to 1 in low. Good luck.

the gear ratio that will put you back to stock is 4.14:1... the closest to that is 4.10:1. your 4.56's are for 38 inch tires and up. the gears shouldn't hum either i dont think. plus your speedometer is off calibration now.

i changed my 3.73's to 4.56 also. Bought them at 4wheelparts and had them installed there. Have not noticed any noise coming from the gears at all. But then again it is hard to hear them over the tires and exhaust. Did you go easy on them for 500 miles or so i.e. no high speed or hard acceleration, no long periods of constant speed?

What was the total cost involved?I also have 3:73's (stock)and am running 37" BFG muds with a 6" lift on my CC LB and am getting ready to make the swap. I read that 4.56's where the way to go and now I see that 4.30's would be a wiser choice? could someone fill me on on which would be best? I tow a 14' landscape trailer in my part time business but other than that its my daily driver. Thanks for any info

ultimately, 4.38:1 will get you exactly where you were before with 31.5'' tires and 3.73's. your effective ratio with 37's and 3.73's is 3.17, which is WAYY to low unless youre going to be doing 80 on the free way all the time, which your not, because you are going to be landscaping. if you don't see alot of highway, i would go to 4.56's due to the fact of the higher rotating mass of the tires, which is hard to get going, plus your pulling a trailer too. better for the hills, poor for the highway.

I paid 1200 installed at 4wheelParts. Im running 36" Swamper STS on my CC SB and the 4.56 are a bit much for me. I do a lot of highway driving and at 70 mph im turning about 2200 rpm but... acceleration is awsome and if I keep it under 60 mph i'll get around 16-17 mpg. But if you are pulling alot and not doing lots of highway driving 4.56 are the way to go. IMO
