Red face a little direction

well I've known for some time that the rear axle in the 77 is going out, and as it strted to bind in reverse the other day, I think that I better get on it. Here's my question. I"m planning on making this thing more towing/hauling capable, so should I stick with the old dana 44 and build it up, or go with a ford 9'' instead? Any help would be appreciated.

Full floater Dana 60 at least. Very strong. You can easily get parts and upgrades for a D60 too.

I thought you could go full floater with a 9". Either way the 60 makes sense. Would the 60 hang from the current suspension? I'd like to do this job a little at a time. 77 f100, 3leafs in the rear.

I think thesprocket misunderstood your post. You don't want a Dana 60. For one, you'd have to carry two spares.

The rear Dana 44 in a Ford is a rare bird. The 9" is a stronger unit. I'd swap one of those in and get it set up with the gears that you want. If you're doing a fair bit of hauling/towing, I'd go with 3.73's or 4.11's.

One of the perks of going with a 9" is that you can easily swap third members out. You keep one set up with 4.11 gears and another with 3.00 gears. That way you can pick the third member you want for the job you want it to do - hauling or gas sipping.

I thought that might be the case. I'm not all about dual spares, though I do have the room under the bed. any way that I could swap in some axle tubes with my bolt pattern? But now we're probably getting into more work than I can pull off in a week.

The 77 f100 was the only one to get the 44 to my knowledge. Anyway, can I go full floating with a 9" and if so how hard is it to do? I like the expense factor of the 9'' better. I've heard that the towing/hauling of a full floating axle is far superior to those that aren't. Thanks for the posts thus far guys, I'm enjoying the info.

What is a full floating 9"? What rigs do they come in? Full floater D60's aren't always dualies.

I've heard that there's a conversion for a ford 9" that makes it a full floating axle.

This is to my knowledge where the axle tube (outer casing) holds the external forces and the internal axle has only the engine forces to deal with. Most regular axles have both forces on the internal axle shafts. I could esaily be wrong on this, as I've kinda pieced it together from stuff people have told me.

I think when he said dual spares he was meaning having an 8 lug rear pattern and a five lug front
