Question EGT Sensor Install

Hello All,

Finally getting to my upgrades. First one I'm doing is installing gauges and already have a set of 3 VDO gauges with all the hardware. The EGT gauge came with a sensor with the fittings and a piece that is supposed to be welded onto the exhaust manifold. I located a couple welders here that can do it, but only if I take the manifold off the truck. I've seen other installs where a hole was drilled and then tapped to accept a fitting. I would rather do that than weld, but do not want the sensor tip sticking all the way into the exhaust manifold. Instructions say tip should be in no more than half the diameter of the manifold. Does anyone have experience with this type of EGT sensor install and found another way of accomplishing this. I appreciate any advice or help.

Thanks, Vince Makela

Does your probe have a slip nut and a collar? Is the collar threaded on the end towards the probe (away from the lead wires)? If so get a tape to match the thread size on the collar, drill and tap the location of the install, screw in collar, slide probe with slip nut through collar to desired depth, tighten slip nut.

Check on deisel manor's site (sponsor) and you can see the probe & collar setup. Whomever you bought the gauges from should also be able to help you. You might need to get a different collar setup.

The probe has a fixed collar and came with an adapter from the proprietary fitting to a 1/4 NPT male, the probe extends a full inch beyond the end of that. Then that is threaded into the "bung" which is a 1/4 NPT female. The bung is what is supposed to be welded to the manifold after a hole is drilled. Right now I have an adapter taking it from the 1/4 NPT male to a 3/8 NPT male, but that's a pretty big hole I would have to drill and tap. I will look for the slip nut type fitting, as the probe is 2 1/2 inches long from the collar. Thanks for the help.
