Recently while pulling my trailer uphill I lost turbo and the service engine soon light came on. Eventually the light went out but the turbo quits just after starting, which results in no power and bogging. Any ideas as to what might be wrong. I was recently in the desert with the rig and had some dirt in the airfilter. I blew the dirt out, but haven,t driven it yet to see if that was the problem
Welcome to the forum!! We'll see if we can help you out here.
A few questions for you. Do you know what the codes are in the computer? You say the turbo quits just after starting...does the turbo spin at all? What does the compressor wheel look like if you take the intake tube off? Can you freely spin the compressor wheel by hand, once the intake tube is off?
It sounds like some dirt made it past the filter and has pretty much toasted your turbo. But, it could be something like failed bearings in it too.
Do you have any mods? What year? Miles on the truck?
The more info you can give us, the better equipped we'll be to help you with your problem.
Hmmm, I wonder if the turbo quitting isn't the turbo but something cutting the fuel off and the boost drops off as a result. Need more info to confirm.
And welcome to the forum. You won't find a better place on the internet to learn about your truck.
I really couldn't tell if it went out of overdrive or the turbo started to spin then quit, the result was it lowered in rpm and power and always pulls out of cruised control. It is a 2001 F350 crew with 7.3 diesel. There are no mods and it has 56K miles. I just left Quartzsite AZ and was climbing a steep grade near Flagstaff AZ when this happened. I did see some dust in the bottom of the air filter box, don't know how critical that is.

I'm not real diesel savvy, but it felt like the turbo started to go and suddenly quit. At the same time the cruise control dropped out and rpm's fell. This is a 2001 F350 Crew with 7.3 diesel. It has 56K miles with no mods. There was a time when this first happened that the service engine soon light came on, but after 3 cycles it went off. I haven't taken it to a dealer yet to get any codes or diagnostics done.

Dust in the bottom of the box is ok. In the stock filter setup, the unfiltered air is underneath the filter. If there is dust above the filter and in the rubber intake tubes, that's when you need to worry.
Did it make any noises when the power quit? I'm beginning to think it's not the turbo that's gone bad. You say the codes went away. I'm assuming this means that you've driven the truck since. Does it seem ok now, or still way down on power? Can you hear the turbo at all, if you've driven it again?

It didn't make any noise. The service engine soon light eventually went away, but still have no power. It (the turbo) acts like it wants to go, then quits after about 2 seconds of running and its back to no go.
don't know what a silicone boot is or where it is located, I will try to check that out though, thanks
There are several of them. They connect all of the air tubes together. There's two off the y-pipe (in the middle on the top of the motor, two towards the front that connect to the intercooler, and two more under the y-pipe that connect it to the motor. There are 6 in total. The tubes are around 3" in diameter, and the boots are held on with clamps, probably a T-bolt type of clamp. Look for any splits or tears in the boots, and to see if one has come completely off one of the tubes.
