One of the first things I noticed after I got my truck was that I loose traction in a lot of places. The truck is the one in my signature. It is a 2WD and does not have limited slip. Heck, I got stuck in my yard a couple of weeks ago and it was just wet grass. I've got the stock size tires on the truck and they are regular street tires, but I've never been stuck in the car and I go through this same place all the time with it. The bottom line is that it doesn't take much at all for me to loose traction or get stuck. A little wet dirt, wet grass, etc., and I'm done. Is there anything that I can do to improve this?
get some decent tires, they might cost a little but are worth it. maybe look into some sort of limited slip or locker for the rearend, my 2wd 96 F150 has a 3.55 limited slip i cant say it'll never get stuck but it can handle snow and grass.
A good set of mud/snow rated tires will do a lot, but the real fix will be a Limited Slip differential upgrade. Broncograveyard sells them at very reasonable prices.
I would agree, go with a limited slip or a SELECTABLE locker, like ARB or Eaton. I like Eaton just because its all electric, you don't have to plumb in a compressor, just run two wires and a relay that are all included with the locker. Turn on when needed, off when on the street. You can get an Eaton for 650.00, ARB is more like 750-800.
Randys Ring and Pinion http://www.ringpinion.com sells a really good limited slip for $450. You can get them cheaper, but Randy's and my local shop both talked this one up a lot. It's an Eaton Positraction, if you have the 8.8 rear end, I think the part number is EAT19588.
If I ever have a 4x2 truck again, I would put one of these, or the locker in it.
Good luck
If you're picking up a ltd slip diff, pick up a used low mile one from an explorer or any other 8.8 for that reason. I picked 1 up from an 02 explorer with 40000 miles, and it's been great. $50 and new clutches was all it needed.
My truck is a HD 3/4 Ton. The differential is the big 10" (I believe). It has 12 bolts on the cover. I seem to be having a little trouble finding one for this particular rearend. Can anyone help me out.
There's no 10" - 99 & up superduties get the 10.5", 1985-ish to 1997 got the 10.25", earlier got the Dana 60.
The problem with picking up a limited slip carrier from a junkyard is that you have to set the gears up again - not something your average home mechanic should attempt.
