91 Explorer Starting Problems

The Explorer has a new starter but when turning on the ignition key, no current goes to the solenoid. (The battery is new, and the Terminal Block under the dash has been replaced also.)

I can start the car by crossing over terminals on solenoid.

Can anyone tell me where the current originates from??

Thanks!

Ignition switch. Recent post this bad connection gave a funky spark miss. For you, I'd cehck the starter relay. It's a good point to work forward towards the starter and backwards to the ignition switch. Get the schematic off the autozone web site.

Which terminals are you crossing over? If you're checking for voltage at the wire to the small terminal when someone is holding the key in the START position and getting no voltage, the most likely problem is the ignition switch. The switch is easy to change and should cost around $10 to $15 at your local parts store.

If you get no signal voltage to the solenoid another place to look is the neutral start switch at the transmission or its harness. If the vehicle won't start in P try it in N or some of the drive positions but be careful. A VOM will quickly show if this is the culprit if the quick first doesn't work. Good luck.

I had the same problem...

I diagnosed as follows: charge/check battery, cables - are they tight, are they corroded (look all the way down the length, are they tight at both ends), starter relay (on the fender wall), nuetral start switch from the transmission, solenoid, starter.

I can guarantee 98% of the time it's one of these and most of the time it's actually battery/cable related especially when cold. Click, click, click in the cold? Not enough Cold Cranking Amps to turn the motor.

Most of the previous posts have suggested how to trouble shoot these. All are easy to diagnose. If in doubt ask a specific question and someone will be glad to help.
