well, the tag in my 79 with a 400 (not quite a 302 but jsut to give ya an idea) says 6 degrees btdc at 650 rpm...of course i just say, advance it till it gets the smoothest at the highest rpm. then drive it, if it pings back it off a tiny bit till it stops, it if doesnt ping, advance it a little more till you get pinging or a slight lope in the idle... then back it off a little bit. then adjust the carb from there for idle speed. it should give you more power and economy over the stock specs.
79supercab is right, but don't forget to remove/block the vacumme advance if the motor has one. Also, after you get the inital timing right you may want to also look at the centrifugal advance inside the distributor, if it has one.
