tapping on a cold start

today, i noticed a tapping in the top end while at idle and when i rev the motor it eventually goes away, like it isn't getting oil. i recently had an oil change and had the EGR valve replaced again (it did take away that other rattle i had at partial throttle). it's on its 3rd one of those. so my question i pose to ya'll is "What do you think?"

add: i did stick a couple of bottles of techron and am preparing to change the oil in it as soon as i finish this tank of gas. the gas here is not the greatest and i thought that could have been my rattle problem (idk why lol)

add: 4.6L V8

i love my ford, but this is just too much for 5300 miles.

sounds like a common dry start issue. what oil filter are you running?

its using the oe motorcraft filter...i had the oil changed at 4715 miles (motorcraft 5/20), it has just about 5300 on it now as it sits in the driveway...

i found an oil spot (and its real fresh) in the driveway yesterday, but none of the vehicles leak oil, i looked under mine best i could, but its a tight fit with that low bumper.

Try some Mobil1 5w-20 synthetic and Ford filter. I'll bet she won't tap on cold startups with that.

there are a few people here that use that in their tritons, and they state the mobil recommends it for these motors, but idk, never had a modular till now

The M1 5w20 is a really, really, really over priced oil, and many, many UOA's prove this.

MC 5w20 is one heck of a good oil, and changing to a full synthetic won't do jack for your problem.

How's the oil level on your truck? Really sounds like the motor is low on oil. Sounds like you need to run it into the dealership.

i did just that at 7:45 this morning...

i checked it 4 times yesterday, after it sat for about 30 minutes, it was really thin towards the full mark and really thick towards the low mark, but I was sure if gravity would have caused that as I pulled it out. I got an Oil and Filter change, and did make my Service Man aware of the noise. I have cranked it 3 times today with no problems so lets hope that was it...

Hmm, I wonder if the ADBV (anti-drain back valve) on the oil filter is working correctly.

I suppose that it's possible that the filter *could* be letting oil drain out of the filter and thus leading to an extended dry start.

my guess is the filter was bad. the ADBV was faulty.

thanks guys, will update... i was thinking that maybe they didn't put oil in the filter at first (oops)... will update... you know, its ashamed that you spend so much money on a truck for it to have problems, but i hope that after this it will be almost perfect...
