lately (past month or two), i've had a hard time getting it started. if i dont push the gas, then it will crank for awhile and finaly fire, but if i do give it some gas it will start.
it keeps dieing unless i keep my foot on the gas until it warms up. once its warmed up, it idles perfectly, not a hickup.
i thought it might be a vacuum leak, but seems like if it were a leak it would also affect performance when its warmed up.
Is it a carbed or injected? injected a weak battery can effect how much fuel will get pumped from the get go. Did you try adding any Heet to your fuel ,some moisture maybe in your tank and fuel? When cold it would really make it difficult to idle sometimes. I'm not ruling out a vacuum leak they can be sneaky culprits.

Woomaodal, Check the side of the choke (round and black with an electrical wire) on the choke housing on the carb, and check if it has three screws?
some times the choke assembly will have rivets.
What is the year, make and size of engine?
its a 1981 F100, 4.9L 300, single barrel Carter carb. i know it has screws that you can take off and there's a spring inside the black plastic box thing.
I have the same engine in a 1981 F 100, your carb is about to go, It will soon dump gas on the engine and not start at all, It may already be dumping some as it is, check for drips, It is a simple replace, Advance Auto has rebuilt ones for about 100 with returning the old one, and a good mechanic can replace and set it up in about an hr,
I would reccomend getting a new carb, the carter works good when it works and when it goes it goes,,,,
