Hey all.. i just inherited a 1989 f-150 EFi . This was our company truck and it has been sitting unused for about a year. we got the truck cranked but it was running sluggish with no power but we drove it to the shop just barely. the mechanics proclaimed it had contaminated fuel and flushed and cleaned the fuel system to the tune of $700.. no change in the truck performance.. then they proclaimed a bad catalytic converter and cut the exhaust to bypass it.. no change in the running of the truck. This is when i became the owner .. boss didn't want to throw good money after bad. i've also discovered that they had moved the plug wires up one position on the distributer.. i've changed that back and checked everything with the timing marks lined up and replaced plugs and wires. I'm showing good fire and when i pull the plugs they are wet with fuel.. but the truck sounds like it is out of time now and will not crank back up.. what else could they have screwed up?? I drove this truck on a daily basis until it was parked a year ago and it ran like a new vehicle when we parked it at that time.. any advise is appreciated
Hmm ...just thinking some more.. i rechecked the timing for about the 10th time and am confident about that ,the firing order and the distributer .... it makes me think that there may be a timing gear problem.. i looked at some old threads. can these timing gears jump a cogg?? I have no reason to think they have been replaced in about 120000 miles.. I thought since the rotor was turning everything in there was hunky dory..i just assumed the distributer is turned by the camshaft.. but it's mounted awful low down there on the side of the engine ...What does turn that distributor???
