1986 f150 fuel problem

Sorry for the long post!!!!

Im having a problem with my truck. A little history on the truck first, the truck has been sitting for about 5 or 6 years, tires are dry-rotted, etc.....

We did a tuneup on it, new plugs/wires/cap/rotor, replaced the front fuel tank, replaced the intank pump on the front gas tank, and cleaned the screen and such on the rear tank.

We got ready to go get it running, and somebody that had it before, said they had problems with the fuel pump, so they wired in a manual switch to run the fuel pump. (i dont know if its for the intank pump or the inline pump) We got a jump box, went out to the truck, and got it to run. It did start, and ran but never dropped down to idle. It was leaking oil out the pass valve cover, so a few days later, we pulled the tb off, cleaned it really good, pulled the upper intake off, and changed out the valve cover gasket. After we put it all together, we cranked it up, it ran just fine, and even dropped down to like 600-700 or so idle, alot lower than the previous 1100 idle it had. Well, then it started to leak on the pass side again, really bad. We found out that the gasket we just put on wasnt on completely right (doh) so we just parked the truck. A week later I brought the truck home, and took everything apart, changed out the gasket again. This time after it was all put back together, it ran, but did not drop down to idle. Anyways, i drove it around for about 30 minutes....just playing around with it in the neighborhood. It was running fine, no leaks. Then i flipped the switch for the rear tank. It was still running and ran for another 5-10 minutes, then as i was backing the truck into the driveway, it died. Now, after flipping it back to front tank, the truck will only start on starter fluid. If i open the bores, spray fluid in the intake, then crank it up, it will run till it runs out, then dies. if i push in the valve on the fuel rail with the key on, it pushes fuel out, so i know the fuel pump is working and it has fuel at the rail, but aside from that im stuck and dont know what to check. It does have spark, and like i said, will run on starter fluid but not on gas from the tanks. Im new to fords, and new to this dual tank setup and having 3 fuel pumps, so hopefully somebody can give me some insight and what to check on. Thanks!!!

You did'nt say if you have changed the fuel filter, if not you should after sitting that long it's a good idea. Get a fuel pressure gauge and hook it up to the rail and check the pressure and see what it reads should be 35-45 w/o the engine running. One more thing, this should be obvious, but is there gas in the tank? Thats one thing that can be overlooked sometimes.

I am almost positive the fuel filter has been replaced, and im sure there's gas in the tank. I'll have to try to get a fuel pressure gauge and read that

fuel filter has been replaced, i just crawled under the truck and was checking over the fuel pumps, and the one in the framerail was unplugged.....go figure, something simple. Now i just need to find some tires.

Oh yeah, i did have another problem though, if i dont have a manual switch wired in to turn the fuel pumps on and off, the fuel pump doesnt shut off when you turn the key off. Any clues what to check for?

Glad it was somthing simple, at least it did'nt cost anything to fix. My fuel pump wiring came unplugged a few times over the summer, and finially put ring terminals on the end of the wires and bolted them to the studs on the f.p.

There is a relay mounted on the firewall next to the master clyinder for the fuel pump, I would see if that has been tampered with.
