go ahead and get a valve job done on a set of heads and put them on. That myth about a new pair of heads 'blowing the rings out' is just that, a myth. No truth there at all. At the shop where I work we sell rebuilt heads everyday that get put on top of old shortblocks, I have never heard a customer complain about ring problems afterward. Just do it. DF
Jon, I should have mentioned- do yourself a favor and get a set of heads new enough to have hard seats or have your machinist put them in a set. The reason you have this problem is because your old heads are using unleaded fuel, and they are not happy about it. Tetraethyl lead is no longer lawful in gasoline but hardened seats will solve the problem. DF
MY dad agree's with yall. Its not that I dont its just that I get alittle scared I have taken very good care of my truck and I dont want to screw anything up.My dad say also that the lower compression is probably because of the worn out heads he says the rings are probably fine.I dont have the money right now I would have to buy a set of heads from somewhere and then pay to have them reworked. What is a good estimate of how much it would cost to have heads reworked with the hardend valve's.If I get the money I will go ahead a put a new set on there if the rings dont hold up I will do a rebuild. But I know fords will run on very bad rings for awhile they will just smoke. As good as I like to take care of my engine I guess the only way to really fix this for good is to put a new set on there. With an old set I guess I would probaby have problems with it too.
