axle ratios

Hi all, I've looked on the net and not found, and my books don't say, what axle code is what ratio. The tags were broken off already. The big bronco forum had no answers, so here we go- I found two 1979 broncos in a local salvage yard that have the running gear still there, engines are missing. I can't turn the wheels and count because of how they are sitting. The door tags are on both trucks and say that one truck has code 14 axles and the other code 16. Both have 9 inchers in back and high pinion 44s in front. Anybody out there know what ratios these numbers correspond to? I might want to buy the axles for myself if I know the gearing, I've got 4.56s now and our current gasoline prices make them a very exspensive ride. DF

my bronco book doesn't match the codes you listed with any year. if it were me, i'd pop the front diff cover off and count the gears just to make sure. it't probably pretty safe to say that there 3.55's.

My book only shows to '77 so this may or may not help. For both Bronco (the little ones) and trucks in 77 it shows:

#14=3.00-1
#16=3.50-1

Hope this helps out.

Nathan

It depends on what gear ratio you have in front if you're looking to replace the rear. Gear ratios have to be within 1 - 2 % of eachother to not destroy eachother, or not destroy the transfer case. To find out the percentage differce, you must divide the larger ratio by the other, and look at the number to the right of the decimal point and how far they make the answer from the decimal point from 1.00 for example 3.54 ÷ 3.50 = 1.01 or 1%, not 4% different. And likewise 4.11 ÷ 4.09 = 1.005 or only a 1/2% difference. These differences are about the same as a 1/3" variation in front to rear tire height which probably happens more often than we realize.

I have not seen a bronco with anything but 3.50 gears. Not that it does not exist, but i've seen a bunch and they were all 3.50. Nathan is correct though, 14=3.00, 16=3.50.

I agree...3.50 sounds right.
