Suffering from Ford truck cabin fever, as my 70' F-250 is in storage for the winter, I've been thinking about things I want to do with it in the spring. One item that keeps coming up is an aftermarket intake. I would likely go with an Edelkbrock Performer intake, but would like to know some of the pros and cons involved with this upgrade. I will driving the truck as much as I can afford to put gas in it, and don't want to significantly degrade the fuel economy. Also, what technical problems might I encounter if I change the intake, will I have to change timing significantly, and how significant would the retuning of the carburetor be. I know this is a rather long winded post about a simple upgrade, but as I'm working with a limited budget, and technical knowledge base, I like to know as much as I can before I get involved in a project. Thanks!
I'd pass on the Performer. The stock 4 barrel intake flows better, and seals to the heads better. Plus, it'll save you money. It does weigh more though.
So, unless you want to step up to the Performer RPM or another better manifold, save your money and get a stock iron 4 barrel.
The intake shouldn't affect ignition timing significantly.
I bought the EDL-2105 intake and EDL-1406 carb. I have been extreamly happy with my decision. Piece of cake to install. The best part is I did not have to adjust the carb! Runs like a striped ape, till I broke my timing chain.... That a work in progress...lol
Thanks for the prompt replies guys! That's interesting, rusty70f100, maybe I'll just stick with my stock intake and use the money for gas. I just got a new Holley street avenger carb right before I put it away for storage so I didn't have a chance to get it tuned up. If I get that tuned up, that might give me the performance increase I was looking for. Any tips on tuning this kind of carb?
The Performer intake,in my opinion, has a little better low end than the stock "iron" intake due to the smaller runners which speed up the intake velocity. It's not quite as good as the iron intake at higher RPMs. JMHO as I have used both.
I got a stock Performer on my 390 with 600cfm and the combo works great. Swap was easy, just watch how the distributor comes out. Carb has yet to be tuned mostly b/c I havent had a chance.
