A friend, and fellow reader today told me about a big bearing 9" rear. This is the first that I have heard of this, and don't wish to offend him, but I would be interested to hear responses to his comments, because this is totally news to me.
This is what he wrote;
Actually, there are two differences among 9" rear ends. First is the bearing ends. The axle bearing (near the wheel) can either be a small tapered bearing (a small bearing end) or a large roller bearing (a big bearing end.) The large roller bearing is used on the 3600 lb and up rated 9" rear axles (at least in 1978 models.)
The other difference is that -78 the third member is held in with 1/2" studs, and 79- uses 3/8" studs. I don't know if a third member with 1/2" holes will line up right with a 3/8" studded axle, and I also don't know if a 3/8" holed third member will fit over the 1/2" studs.

hey John, yes there are. i had one a long time ago in a 1968 Fairlane 500 i owned. i do believe it uses a 3 in. bearing. it's been a while. but yes there are out there. C.J.
This is what I ran into while trying to repair my 1980 4x4 9 in rear. It has 31 spline rear axles with the tapered roller bearing out at the wheel. I found an older bronco with the same 3.50 ratio rear but it had 28 spline axles and a regular type roller bearing out at the wheel. I had to swap the 31 spline carrier onto the 28 spline bronco ring gear so the larger axles would fit. Then it was a bolt in. I would think there are probably many variations of axle housings/bearings depending on the application. The only variation of the center section I've seen is the 28/31 spline count.
When I replaced the wheel bearings on mine, all I could get was a roller bearing. I was told the tapered bearings had a tendency to push out on the seal when the truck was loaded so all that was offered for replacement was the roller. Take it for what its worth.
