It ain't the MALE symbol...
Its the Greek symbol for IRON.
Considering their engines last 300 to 600K its appropriate.
and from 88 to 93 NHTSA has Volvo as the lowest occupant fatality vehicle in serious collisions. No recorded driver deaths at all.
I rolled a 78 245 wagon at least 5 times at 70 and walked away with monor scratches and in 2000 had a drunk back up on the freeway in the rain at 45 to get back to the exit he missed. I hit him at 55 (combined impact speed 100) in my 90 240 sedan and had just air bag rash and a diagonal bruise across the chest where the seat belt retracted. Engine was totally under the car, front end pushed back to the firewall, but NO intrusion into the passenger compartment. The NYFD Rescue Unit was amazed, I tilted the seat back and sld into the back seat and got out thru the rear window. Spent the night at the ER as they insisted on a CAT scan/MRI to be sure I was OK.
Oh, the other guy? He went to the morgue...in his Chevy Caprice.

I've had several Volvos, always liked them. I lived in Sweden for a time and earned a certificate in Volvo repair (printed in Swedish, of course!) buty I never really gave much thought to the origin of the name. But no, it has nothing to do with the Swedish word for what it sounds like in English...! (Get your mind out of the gutter! Who would name a car that!)

It's no coincidence that the Five Hundred now gets the highest marks for safety in it's class. The incorporation of Volvo technology by Ford has been underway for several years now. It's even to a point where Ford no longer makes any bones about it, and in fact touts it. You've probably seen the commercial where Bill Ford mentions the sharing of Volvo (and Mazda) technology as indicative of the" new and better" Ford.

As a previous poster said, Volvo, means "I roll", in Latin. I had a 1962 Volvo PV 544 with the B18S engine. Four cylinder, torqey for a 1.8 liter, twin SU carbs like an english sportscar. Spicer axle and Borg Warner 4 speed manual transmission.
Looked like a '41 Ford fastback, tudor. Handled very well, and the smoothest , quickest standard I ever drove. The Volve shift linkage was as smooth and precise as a Hurst, and that's saying something, IMO.
If I was the type of guy who restored cars, the PV544 would be my first choice.
I always thought the next model, the Volvo 122S would make a nice hot rod.
Yank the 4 banger outta there and stuff in a 302 or a Chevy 350 with a 5 speed standard. What a sleeper.
There used to be a kit where you could put in a Mustang 302 or a Chevy 350 and 5 speed, in Volvo 240 wagons. I think Paul Newman and David Letterman, both had 240 wagons, 5 speeds and Mustang 302 V8's.
Fast, and practical.
