Just tighten the oil plug firm. You don't have to muscle it. The drain plug has the gasket built in. I don't know what the torque is, but I have been changing oil for over forty years, and have not stripped out a plug yet.

Tighten plug until it strips. Then it is too tight.

Would'nt always trust the Haynes manual when dealing with torque values. Had a bad time with my 68 Mustang a while back when installing my heads after having some work done. I was going to put them back on the engine block and refered to my trusty Haynes manual for torque setting. Well long story short, they gave the wrong value, which i found out rightaway. Needless to say it sheard right off, clean with the engine block even. I was not happy and threw the book out and orderd the original reprint shop manual for the car.
Sorry for the vent just an FYI.

But as for the question, like chriswdtx said snug, making sure the gasket is made-up enough.

I use German torque....Guten Tite.

Actually, I have a Fumoto drain valve, and flip it 90 degrees to open or close it!

Much easier and way less messy.

I installed a oil drain valve, so I don't have to deal with unscrewing the drain plug and screwing it back in. It's a secure spring loaded ball valve. If you're like me, and you change your own oil on a normal basis, I think it's a worthy investment.
