Best MPG mods

Hello all,

I have done many searches over the past months to find the best MPG mods to make. I haven't had much luck of finding anything in one place. What is everyone's opinion on the best mods to make to improve MPG along with a price. Thanks for all the help!

Personally I have a '00 F-250 with 147K on it.

This has been covered many times. But, I'll bite...

1) how you drive. Easy on the throttle, keep your freeway speed down on the freeway. Can make a HUGE difference.

2) If you have an 8ft bed, a bed cover makes a big difference (on the highway, not in town). I get about 2.5mpg better on the freeway with a bed cover. If you have a 6ft bed, less difference. If you have one of the new dinky beds (4 to 5 feet) it doesn't make much difference.

3) Tires - size and type, plus air pressure can make a 1 to 2 mpg difference. Of course, if you put 38 inch tires on, be prepared for a big mileage hit.

4) Fuel pickup, prepump connections modifications. Made about 1/2 mpg difference on mine. A regulated fuel return is supposed to make a difference, too. I can't say, as I haven't done it yet.

Others - if I got "2mpg gain" for each mod that claimed that, I'd get over 30mpg by now. Don't believe them. For everything I've done, my in town mileage has gone from 13.5-14, now averages 15. My freeway average mileage has gone from 16-17 to 20+.

Also, bear in mind that although mine is an automatic, it is an XL standard cab - likely the lightest PSD Super Duty. It weighs in at 6400 pounds with a full tank (according to a local scale). If you have a crew cab XLT or Lariet, you can add 1100 to 1300 pounds to that, and a reduction in mileage. If you have a 6-speed, you can get better in town, and about the same mileage on the highway.

Probly the most significant MPG mod you can get is a Econo tune from Jody Tipton at www.dp-tuner.com. You can just get your PCM flashed instead of paying for a whole multi-position chip.

I hear of 2-3 mpg increases on TDS constantly. Plus you get more power because the econo tune is an 85 hp increase over stock.

That's the tune i have from Jody. It's best on highway driving. I installed the
external reg system(Big Fuel) and can't say i've noticed a difference. Most likely
this spring/summer will show a difference. I'm runnig about 22.7-23.5mpg pure
highway with the econo tune UNDER 70mph(2000rpm) in summer. Before econo
chip about 20.7mpg.

How do Jody's tunes compare to the ones they flash on a flip chip from Superchip? Can he reflash the superchip flipchip?

How about other mods such as the air dog or things of that nature?

I know that Jody can flash his tunes onto a Superchips module but I wasn't aware of a superchip flip chip.

I have an F350 cc, drw,4wd and have seen an increase in MPG with Super Chips tunner on setting 2, cold air intake, and I think that the CCV and HPX LINE mods make a difference and are very cheap to do.
I also now that staying under 2000 rpm and using a fuel additive have helped me get a best so far of 17.3 with a 4:10 gear!

empiretc - if you run Jody's Econo tune, you need gauges. It will definitely elevate your EGT, and you need to know. You should also have a free-breathing exhaust, to keep the EGT in check, and probably a better intake. Now we are talking some serious money...

Also, as has been pointed out, it really is only good for economy when running at highway speeds. Jody says for best economy in town, only use the tow tunes (40 or 60hp). For my money, the best economy gain (other than how I drive) has been the bed cover.

I haven't registered such a big increase in mpg with Jody's econo tune - but that is hardly fair, as I've not been able to take any long trips since putting in the DP tuner chip. It seems like it gets better economy, but until I have hard numbers to back it up, I can't make that claim. I just can't imagine it will boost my highway mileage ANOTHER 2 mpg, since the bed cover bumped it 2.5 to well over 20mpg.

Also, since my truck is not equipped with a lie-o-meter, I can't tell you what that says about economy. I have heard that a chip messes it up badly - so it reports very, very high economy when there is little or no change from before the chip.

After the novelty of having a boost guage wears off it may help u maintain better mileage...just keep it from climbing a lot.

Yeah thats just the thing. I usually get around 19mpg with the mixed running around I do. With the minor mods I have done, the one that made a noticeable difference in mpg right away was putting on the napa filter. I Still have a minor fuel leak that is skewing my data every time I calc mpg, but i plan to get it fixed just as soon as the weather warms up some.

I am willing to try most things to improve mpg. The blue cps didnt give me much of a gain so far. I am happy with what I am getting and do not really think anything is going to make it better. I went to corpus and got right at 25. That was impressive!! I still just wonder where, after so many mods, it levels off or you reach the point of diminishing returns.

I know that happens a lot when someone gets their truck modded up, they cant help but really get on her.
