Unhappy v8 vs v10

After totaling my 03 crew cab v10 on thursday I'm in the market for a new truck! My problem is that are very few new crews with a v10. They are either a v8 or a diesel (which I don't want). Does any one have experience with the new V8 in a superduty? It seems a little small for that truck.

Hi. I too am hunting for an F250 and asked the same question. Now I've driven the diesel but that's it. My only info on the v10 and v8 are second hand and from this and other forums as well as online reviews of owners. I take it all with the proverbial grain of salt as I've yet to drive either and see for myself.

From what I've "heard" many describe the 5.4 as doggy and not quite enough punch for the heavy SD's. Coming from the V10 I bet you'll feel the difference when you drive an 8. I've also read reviews stating the v8 is just fine for them and has ample power for their varied towing needs. I also understand the new 5.4 motors are a little more powerful then the later models.

I bet if you do a V8 VS V10 search on here you'll have plenty to read over and help you decide. Like i said I have not had a chance to test drive the 10 or the 8 and though I'm leaning toward the PSD, I won't discount either untill I have the time to go and drive them.

Good luck in your search and I hope you came away in better shape than your truck.

I personally would buy the V-10 over the V-8, as the saying goes "there's no replacement for displacement". I've had both (now own a diesel), if I had to go back to a gasser it would be the V-10...hands down. I acutally got better gas mileage with the V-10 then the V-8, driving the same roads, and conditions.

Good luck with your search...keep looking you'll find the right truck. Don't rule out the diesel though, I have an 04 6.0L with no problems after 40K miles.

I have an 03 F250 4X4 CC with the V10 and 3.73 gears and my buddy has an 01 SC with the V8 and 4.10 gears. We also live in Colorado and alot of our trips are between 6,000 to over 10,000 feet. The elevation sucks the power out of these engines (Ive heard something like 3% per 1,000 feet). Having said that, his truck is just fine for road trips w/o towing but of course there is a difference. I also rented an Excursion in Arizona and thought it had the V10 untill filling up the first tank and popped the hood to find a V8 (checked the door jam sticker, 4.10 gears).
So if you live near sea level and don't tow a bunch I think you will be fine with the older or even better new V8. His also gets about 1.5 mpg better for the same trip. When I tow my boat with 4 people loaded down for 4 days of camping over the steep passes I am glad I have the V10, but the V8 would get you there. Good luck, hope that helps.

make shure the v8 or ten atleast has 4.10 gears i have the 5.4 and 373s and the stock tires it was no good now i have 35" tires with a6" lift and im swaping in some 4.88s may go with a bigger tire. but the v-8 with the 410 ratio will be fine. But test drive the new ones they go faster than the old engines there all redesinged

V10 ALL the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe I can help because this was a huge dilema for me since once you buy the truck/engine, that's it, it's yours.

2 weeks ago I test drove the following (I drove these trucks hard from a dead stop AND while cruising) Here's what I found:

V8 w/ 3.73's - What a Dog - Unable to break tires loose on dry road
V8 w/ 4.10's - Not Bad - Sometime's able to break tires loose on dry road
V10 w/ 4.10's - Incredible - Able to break tires loose on dry road at will. HUGE difference between V8 w/ 4.10's. Absolute blast to drive. Absolutely get the V10; it's no joke.

I have a 06 F350 Super Duty dually, and it has a 5.4 V-8, and it pulls really hard. I didn't think it would work as well as it has. I have been surprised by the performance of the 5.4.

Arrow V10 Imo...

Sorry to hear about your '03 V10...that's to bad...and hope no injuries resulted.

IMO...if you are going to replace the '03 with a "NEW" '05/'06 SD then you might give the 5.4L 3v a shot. However, with all that said...it would certainly be hard to not want the V10 3v that is out now.

If you might replace with a Used SD...then the V10 is the only way to go.

Check your gut...and go from there.

the new v10 and the 4:30 gears are the way to fly if you want gas for your power. as to finding one forgetaboutit you just may have to order and wait. but the wait is worth every day of it. 362 hp out of the 3 valve motor .
if you can't wait then get the smoker as the 5.4 is 100% dog in a cc.
it may be ok in a reg. cab swb truck as a work truck but not in a cc lwb truck. you need the hp and cubic inches to do the job or you will never be happy.
good luck

v8 vs v10

Thanks guys you've had some great input. And no I came out just fine, no injuries. When I get some pics I'll post them.

You basically supported my original opinion. If you get the chance grab the v10 and run. Othewise the v8 would be ok if I get the right gearing.

Doesn't the higer gearing like a 4.10 reduce you gas mileage?

I don't think I would want a first yr design of the Variable valve timing 5.4.
There has been one failure I know of already out of my dealer.
Sucked a valve at 3k detroyed engine.
The valve keeper broke.
But it was warrantied no problem.New engine for the customer.

NoTime:

I have a 2002 SD crew cab with the 5.4L V-8 with 3.73 LS rear. It is a bit underpowered, but it also is a great performer. I have just rolled over 100K on the ticker and haven't had a lick of trouble. I've pulled a trailer loaded with rain-gutter machine and supplies with no trouble whatsoever.

Mine is a 2wd, not a 4wd. Personally, I have no need for a 4wd truck. If it were a 4wd, I'm sure it's utility would be greatly enhanced and it would do just about anything I asked it to.

Mine is primarily a people-mover and project accomplisher, so I DO use it like a truck. My '02 is rated at 260hp, and I believe the newer '05's and '06's are 300hp rated. That s/b PLENTY for darn near anything you throw at it....unless of course you pull a SERIOUS trailer or toy-hauler, then you'd want the V-10.

I average 14mpg combined with my 5.4L. When towing, I get 11mpg. I think the V-10's get 11-12mpg pretty consistently, towing or not. Obviously, if they're towing something substantial, mpg is going to dip.

What is your intended use for the truck? What about a 5.4L with 4.10 gears? That would be the only thing different I'd want if I were to do it over again, AND if I needed to do more hauling. The new V-8's are very nice though...

yes, it will affect is some. Going from a 3.73 to a 4.10 isn't a HUGE jump, so maybe you'll lose 1-2mpg worst case scenario. But the gains you'll get out of the 4.10's.... I think you'll make the trade-off and feel it's worth it!

My $.02,

I traded in a 05 F250 V10 automatic for a 06 F250 5.4L 6 speed, and I find the power very adaquate. (I do have the 4.10's though)

Gas mileage went from 10 to 13
