Wimpy truck?

I ordered an '06 with the 5.4 and 3.73 LS (4X4 SC/SB XLT). I don't plan to do any towing, just some off-roading to get to my hunting camp. From what I read, most people seem to think the 5.4 is weak, but I hear few reports on the new 3-valve 5.4. What's the word, did I get too little motor? Coming from the old GMC small-block I have now with 220 HP, the 300 seems like it should be plenty.

That's right, Flange. You chose wisely. You bought the truck you needed and the 5.4 ain't no dog.

Choose the engine for the tasks you have in mind. It's as simple as that.

I feel better now

Thanks, Big Orn.

I appreciate the voice of reason. Have you seen a power/torque graph for the new 5.4 anywhere online? I haven't been able to find one and I'm curious to compare it to the Dodge Hemi 5.7. My car has variable valve timing, and I'm a big believer in that technology. I'd like to see what it does to flatten the torque curve.

My 2 cents...

I test drove a 05 5.4L CrewCab250 4x4 last aug/sept.. Mash pedal nothing..took forever for it to drop into grunt and GO.. When I mash the pedal I want to GO NOW not 1 minute later. Hated it..

Example...Pulled out onto a road from a side street, the road is rated 55mph. Pulled out In front of a vehicle (from a comfortable distance, equal to what I do in my current truck) that is going in the same direction as me. My current truck you mash pedal you go. No need to worry about whats coming up behind you.
Totally opposite with the 5.4 test truck, mash pedal, wait, eventually it will go but had me concerned.

Test drove a diesel right afterwards, that thing had *****. V10 evades me, nothing to be found.

I still havent purchased my new truck, why, first of all Im not in a hurry, and second of all I still havent made up my mind on the diesel vs V10.. but im getting close to getting something.

V10, low maint, bad gas mileage, which gets worse if I install a set of larger tires.
Diesel, more maint, better gas mileage(maybe), would have better gas mileage than the V10 with bigger tires. Would be my first diesel

Its a toss up....wish they made them cheaper, that way you werent out so much if you didnt like the darn thing.

Well I will say it again, the 06 5.4 moves very well. I have driven the 06 V10 and it runs OK, but is no rocket. The V10 is only 6.8 Liters. If you want big power, go with the diesel.

I would definatly go with the V-10. I love my 05 F-350 with the V-10. It has alot more power than my 01 V-10 had. I would also say it pulls just as good as the deisel. With the crew cab you are hauling around alot of weight for the 5.4. If you find a dealer you like they can work with you and get you the truck you want.

The V10 or 6.8L is the largest cubic engine FORD puts in the SD's.

This V10 v3 (05 and 06) takes about 150hrs or 6000miles to really put the power to the ground. Call it a "break-in period".

V10 all the way!!! I drove both (sorry 5.4 owners) and the V10 walks all over the V8 and I bet it gets about the same mpg when working.
Both are good but I think you will enjoy the V10 much more.
They are hard to find in my area.
Good luck.

Final drive ratios and fuel mileage

For fun, I calculated RPM at various road speeds using the Torqshift ratios, and the standard 265/70R17 tires. At 70 MPH, the difference between 3.73 and 4.10 final drive is just about 200 RPM. The truck with the 3.73 will be turning 1980, and the one with the 4.10 will be turning 2175 RPM. With a 4.30, you'll need yet another 100 RPM (about 2280) to get to 70 MPH. Going the other way, and figuring to cruise at 2,000 RPM, the 3.73 will give you 71 MPH, while the 4.1 will give you 64.5 MPH, and 4.3 will get you about 61 MPH. I don't have my truck yet, so I don't know what the comfortable cruise RPM is for the 5.4, or how that 200 RPM will affect gas mileage.

The VVT on the 5.4l was released back in 2002...

Why put it on SuperDuties, when you have a bunch of crazy Aussies that are willing to do your Beta testing?

I would suggest that issue of the valve keeper coming off is a one off...

I've owned both... I get about the same gas mileage with the V10 as I did with the V8. Trust me... With the V10, you WILL NOT be disappointed.

When calculating the rpm needed to acheive a desired cruising speed you have to take into account where that rpm falls on the engines hp/torque curve. Lower rpm's donot translate into better fuel economy it it takes the engine out of its sweet spot and causes it to lug. It's entirely possibly to lower the gear ratio 3.73 to 4.30 and improve fuel economy if you put the rpm range of the engine into its sweet spot on the power curve.

362 horse power at the fly along with 457 at the fly. figure in a 65hp loss for the drivetrain.
