When I go over any bumps at any speed above 30, the truck will come down going in a different direction. It is really unnerving on the highway. It's not crazy or anything but it just gets loose. Another this is that I have power steering and the wheel is a little loose. There is this joint on the steering shaft that looks like two disks bolted together with a curved piece inbetween. Is this the rag joint? Well, I can turn the wheel about 15 degrees before the lower shaft will start turning. I also remember reading something about an adjustment screw. Any ideas about either problem is welcome. I have never worked on a suspension or steering before. I used to work on motorcycles when I was in college but this is nothing like that.

Thanks
Austin

Off the top of my head, I'd say your bump problem is shock related. How are your shocks? Yes, the rubber-like disc between the steering shaft and gear box is the "rag joint." If these are worn, they can cause poor steering characteristics, but you also have to consider the tie rods/center link, king pins, and control arm bushings. I've replaced all of these items on my truck and still have poor quality steering. The last option has to be the gear box itself. You can adjust them with the nut and screw on the top of the box. Just back off the nut a little, hold it with a box end wrench and turn in the adjusting screw to tighten. Again, I've tried this with my set-up and little responsiveness was gained. I guess my box is bad as it's the only "original" component.

Does it seem worse when the front or back wheels hit bumps? The back wheels (axle) also contribute to the handling/steering of the truck. Perhaps the rear axle has shifted a bit or moved? A crooked axle (only 1 or 2 degrees) will make the truck misbehave.

Just something to look at,
