i have a 94 explorer 4.0l ohv , performing engine swap and noticed cam pos sensor busted no prob right ,ive got a spare.[wrong] according to haynes manual youve got to have a special tool to time the sensor. ive been told there might be a way to do it without the tool. cant get my hands on the tool ,ford wont even sell me one. any help greatly appreciated.doin this as a favor for nephew now i know why i love mopar
Well Mopar...maybe you should have stuck with them. Oh wait. I have a Ford and a Mopar. What a hypocrit I am LOL. Yes, there is a detail and precise procedure for aligning the Cam sensor. Where the hell did I see it?
There's a guy on this forum who recently did this because he swapped a 91 motor into a 94 and the 94 harness required the cam sensor out of the old motor. Gil Chesterton. Give hime a PM and ask how he did it.
In the Haynes manual there is a section describing the instalation and alignment of the pre-95 CMP. Check page 6-18 under "4.0L pushrod V6 and 5.0L V8 engines (1995 and earlier)". Refer to 9.10 and 9.13 diagrams.
It's seems a little complicated but if you follow the steps it's not as difficult as it looks (no alignment tool needed).
Also...
The CMP sensor is mounted on a drive assembly (fitted in the motor). If the drive assembly is still in the motor you only need to remove the screws from the sensor and replace the sensor unit on the top instead of the whole drive unit. Syncronizing should not be necessary.
