i use quick disconnect pins and carry a large aluminum brief case with me in the truck. then when i get somewhere i unpin the winch and put it in the brief case and carry it with me wherever i go
i just installed a winch and if anyone can get it out they deserve it, i barely got it in there. it is hidden behind my front bumper and in there so tight it'd take 4 hours to get it off. it looks cool though, just a roller fairlead and hook coming out of the bumper.
I like the idea of mounting a receiver hitch in the front and mounting the winch to the receiver when you're out wheeling. Use a locking pin for the receiver so it doesn't try to walk away when you go to the bathroom. Then, when the day is done and you get home, the winch comes inside the house/garage safe and sound with you.
Get a piece of thick wall pipe that will just fit over the bolt head, cut it about an 1 1/2" to 2" long and weld the pipe to the bumper (after you mount the winch...duh). Two is quite enough.
I have an 8K Warn mounted on my tilt car trailer and after 22 years the winch bolts were starting to get loose. Just last week I cut the pipes off, put new bolts in and re-welded the pipes on. Haven't lost the winch in 22 years....it must work.
