Portable propane shop heaters

I have been musing on getting one of these for the shop. I have about 450 sq ft to heat with a 10 ft ceiling. How many btu's do you think I will need. Where is the best deals??

Thanks

thanks, I did read some of them, they mostly talked of heating systems or fuel oil burners. I will keep searching though I have pretty much decided to go with propane and portable.

Thanks

Mark,

I have an LB White ventless propane heater in my shop. The part of the shop that I heat is about 360 sq ft with a 12' gable ceiling. The heater is 80000 BTU and is more than enough to do the job. I also have a ceiling fan mounted and works excellent to push the warm air down. An LB White 80000 BTU will run about $300. They are reasonably protable if you want to take it down and move it elsewhere. They are designed for livestock buildings where fresh air is brought into the room by ventilation fans so Carbon Monoxide is not a problem. Make sure your shop isn't too airtight if you are going to use a ventless.

Multiply your cubic feet of space by 9 and it will give you a rough idea. Ex: 24x24 (floor size) x 10 (ceiling ht)= 5760 cu ft x 9 (btu's per cu ft)= 518400 thousand btu

You can reduce the 9 to about 6 if its well insulated.

BE SURE to allow adequate ventilation if you use a un-vented heater

Also remember you heating system is a source of ignition

I actually just bought a 30,000 BTU propane unit from Home Depot and it works wonders. I have a standard 24x24 2 car garage, with roughly 8' ceilings. In about 10 minutes it was comfortable, and within 30 minutes I was sweating in just a long sleeve T-shirt. It was about 20 degrees outside. They run right off of a minimum 20lb tank. The unit is small, needs 2' of clearance on sides and back, 6' in front (though I say more like 8+ for extra safety) and weighs about 10 lbs.

The best part is it retails for $95.00. That's right, less than 100 bucks. I was pretty psyched. They do make a bigger unit (I think 100K BTU) that was $189.

I hope this helps.

I used it about 5 hours saturday, and about 2 on sunday. It was not a full tank when I started, and it seems at least half full still. I will run it out this weekend I'm sure. I let you know though.

The only thing that concerns me about the propane heaters is that I don't trust propane much anyway, ESPECIALLY not inside the house, where they will be used and most likely STORED.

Propane is highly explosive and it's under pressure in the tank, a tank which is easily compromised either by force (something piercing it or falling on it, etc.) or old age (rusting tanks, leaking connections, etc.).

You should never store a propane tank indoors, whether for a gas grill or a heater like this, and I don't think many people give it a second thought.

Yes, I am a volunteer firefighter and a bit of a psycho about fire hazards, propane scares the heck out of me.

Give me kerosene (flammable but not explosive) any day! That being said, I'd like a natural gas heater in my garage but it's not in the budget right now.
