Source for casting numbers for heads, blocks?

Where can I learn about casting numbers? Would like to know where to look on the engine/ head, and how to tell which one might be "better" than others --like bigger valves, better flowing heads, compression ratio differences, etc for high performance...also how to ID engines in wrecking yards, etc (Mostly for FE engines, but would like to learn more about other Ford engines, too). I currently have a 390 in a 1964 F250.

The Steve Christ book "How to rebuild big block Ford engines" is a good start. Also some of the Ford interchange manuals a decent source. Then there is always the master parts catalogs on CD. The CD's run about $99 ea. You can also search differnet forums archives for info. The main thing with the block casting numbers is some are generic and used on different bore blocks. In those cases you need to look at the cyl bore and compare it to the cyl wall cores it's cast with. I have spent A LOT of time doing what your about to undertake. Well worth the time and you learn lots of interesting things along the way.
