Cast iron should look more brownish or rusty campared to the aluminum top of a 435.

Ford used a sprinkling of both T-18s and N-435s in both 2wd and 4wd trucks, 1/2 throuhg 1-ton, all through the '70s and well in to the 80's. I have plenty of both..there are no hard and fast rules..seems pretty random, even withing the same model and year of truck.

Another very easy way to tell them apart is simply to look at how the shifter is retained in the tranny top cover (meaning all you have to do is unscrew the floor boot and look)

The T-18 shifter retainer cup is on the outside of the tower and is threaded on. The NP-435 retainer cup engages pins on the inside of the tower..push and 1/8-turn to lock/unlock... (and is a hatefull thing to get both on or off).

YEah mine doesnt look rusty just kinda black from oil and the shifter has a cap on the outside and if I remember right I had to unscrew it to get it out.

If the shifter retainer screws off the tower it is indeed a BW T-18.

im pretty sure my 79 f-350 4x4 has a t-18. 1st gear doesnt seem as low as the np435 in my 77 highboy. anybody know what the actual 1st gear ratios for these 2 trans were? also, could it possibly be a t-19 or what were these used in?

working off memory here (bad idea on a hung-over Sat morning..), the T-18 is 6.32:1 and the NP-435 6.79:1...or something very close to those numbers.

The shift pattern for the t-18 trans reverse shifts foward or toward the dash. The np-435 reverse shifts back or toward the seat.

Pretty close. The 435 is 6.69:1. Some Dodge NP435's had a 4.56:1 1st gear.

The T-18s come/came with both of the reverse shift patterns that you identified..and most of the ones used in the later 70s and on have the same 'reverse-back' shift pattern as the 435 does.
