I posted earlier about the starter bolt snapping off in the bellhousing. Thank you to all who replied. This has now turned into the nightmare i feared. The reverse drill bit did not work, so I tried a bolt extractor. Followed as many instructuons as I could find on the packaging and the internet. It snapped off inside the remnant of the bolt.
Do I have any hope of drilling out the broken extractor and the remainder of the bolt? What kind of bit should I use. Anyone who has been in this nightmare (or any similar ones)feel free to chime in please...... please?
Drill it out using a ti-coated pilot bit (Dewalt), using tranny fluid as a cutting fluid with a fair amount of pressure, at a slow speed.
Then you can try a bigger screw extractor that probably won't break, or just drill the hole out completely and use helicoils to repair the thread. Most hardware stores have helicoils, as do auto parts stores.
Snapping bolts isn't that uncommon. If I had a nickel for every bolt/stud I've snapped, I could hire someone to reply to FTE posts for me
You can use the Dewalt bit or just any Titanium bit. remember for Ti its all about heat and lube. So do as he said use tranny oil or high temp bearing grease. Slow and steady and tons of pressure. Its a pain but you can do it.
Plan B. If it`s broken off flush or near flush get a slightly smaller dia. nut and weld it to the stud using a stick welder. This often works but the key is acess.
The weld trick works great not only because it gives you something to grab onto but it heats the parts unevenly and should break any rust or corrosion bond.
thanks to all and their ideas. unfortunatly i dont have access to welding equipment. I went and got the dewalt titanium bits and tried some more drilling. I couldnt even get the 1/8" pilot bit to go anywhere. I guess it doesnt help that its 18deg and 30mph winds in western washington tonight. Its getting towed to a shop now, they can deal with it.
