I want to add a turbo unit to my 1984 6.9. First of all, can I? Second, where would I look to find a unit? Junk yard etc.. and what years are compatible? Also, is the compression the same on a non-turbo to a turbo motor? Looking for all the helpful info I can find.
Thanks,
Todd

the job can be done. there are aftermarket turbos (ats, highmark and banks) around. the biggest problem is the mileage on the headgaskets. if you go to a junk yard to find one, make sure you get ALL parts related to the system, intake and exhaust. if you go with new, you will get all engine related parts needed and the exhaust (turbo to rear of truck) will be separate. the systems work best if you can get the engine to breathe. do some research on this forum on turbos and exhuasts and you will decide what ya want to do.
What I actually meant was, does a 6.9 non turbo vs a 6.9 turbo have different compression? I have had people say I can't do it because the compression is different for a turbo 6.9...??
There was never a stock 6.9 turbo motor.
The 6.9 NA was installed for 4 years, 83 thru 87
The 7.3 NA was installed for 6 years, 88 thru 94
The turbo 7.3 was installed for 2 years, 93 and 94
I am running a 6.9 turbo right now with lots of boost.
