Exclamation Fuel Gauge Problems...

1984 6.9 diesel, dual tanks....when either tank gets down around 1/2 the needle drops off to dead empty? Gauge? Sending unit? Float? Where do I start?
TIA

Its sounds like your sending unit, but it shouldn't effect both tanks. Each tank has its own sending unit... So one of them should still work.. It would be mighty coincidental that both went at the same time and in the same place (at half a tank)... When you switch between tanks (with the engine off) can you here a clunk comming from the switching valve (under the drivers frame rail)????

Fuel gauge...

Yea, I know both tanks are working because I have run them out before. I am not sure they both do it at the same exact spot, but one worked pretty good when I got the truck. N ow they both do it.

Soon after that you can expect the fuel pickup tubes to break off or crack.
Either way the truck will start running out of fuel between 1/4 and 1/2 tank of fuel.
Big tank, no baffles, sloshing fuel not good for the gauges and pickup tubes which are the same unit.

I believe Ford is the only source. Try Ford Parts Online. I haven't heard of any aftermarket sources and I believe they'll run about $100 each. I know a couple guys who have had to replace theirs. The front and rear tanks take different units, too.
