Newbie here....

Been lurking awhile and decided to sign up as I need to redo my tranny in my '95 F150 4x4 I6 5 speed. The wife has a '96 F150 302 auto short bed. A massive whine started coming back from an antique junket. The fluid was down a pint when I checked it. However, I have had some clunking when going into a gear now and then for awhile and when I hit a bump when shifting, it will grind for sure. Otherwise it shifts ok. Which is easiest, pulling the trans and xfer case out as one or separately? I am going to pull the trans and look inside first before I decide to either replace it or rebuild it. When I changed the fluid when it started to whine, there were some pretty good metal slivers on the magnet. I have been a long time mechanic but haven't done a standard in about 30 years......chris3

If you got the tools and cart to set the mission/xfer case combo on, do it that way. But if you only have one set of arms then I would say divorce them and go at it that way. Seeing it's a manual, have you tried taking off the top and looking down and seeing how it looks that way. It would be a heck of alot easier to go about it that way first instead of pulling the tranny and finding out it was ok.

Thanks for the comment.....

I have a flat motorcycle jack that I made a cradle for to drop the trans and xfer case. I don't think I can stablize the complete unit with it. I need to pull it anyway to replace the rear main seal on the engine, which is leaking. I am glad both went at the same time. The trans whines in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear over 30 mph. There is a light clunking when coasting to a stop with the clutch in. U joints are new. I have pulled metal from the magnet. I believe I can get by with just bearings if I haven't damaged the gears. I doubt it is the xfer case as I doubt if I have 30 miles on it in 4wd. I don't drive hard and with a 300 6, what is the point of trying.........Gonna do the clutch and bearing while I am in there......chris3

Your tranny is doing the same as mine. Let me know what you find out on it.

Thanks.
