Pedestal O-rings

I am getting ready this weekend to install new pedestal o-rings, both top and bottom. While I have the turbo out I also am going to be installing the Wicked Wheel that I just received. Wish me luck! One question though. One I get the old o-rings out, and get everything cleaned up, do I put some oil on the new o-rings when I install them? or leave them dry? I thought I read somewhere in here that the o-rings will swell if they come into contact with oil.

i give mine a good coat of Vaseline (not grease) and put a healthy amount on the mounting surfaces so they dont slide around or get moved and cut when you place your turbo on the pedestal and pedestal on block, the turbo gets heavy way back in there. the Vaseline will dissolve into the oil with heat, but grease won't.

while youre at it, remove the intake boots and clean them out real good, do the CCV if you haven't done it already.

the night before you plan to work on it, take a penetrating lube and spray all the V-band clamps (total of two) on the exhaust side of the turbo. one at the inlet behind it, and one that connects to the exhaust downpipe.

look at this: https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...tallation.html

Well the O-rings are gonna come in contact with oil anyhow - cause that is what they are sealing from leaking. I put a light coat on the O-rings when I did mine - it helps keep them where they belong while you are trying to fit the turbo back in there - more so than laying them in there dry anyway.

Thanks for the advise. I already cleaned the intake boots last weekend, thought that was the source of my oil leak (wasn't). I did find that one of the boots had partially slipped off and couldn't believe that I couldn't hear any boost escaping? I have to run the Ex through emissions soon, so the CCV mod will wait I think. Last time I took it through they did pop the hood and check things, don't know what, but would rather not have to deal with hassle of explaining the CCV mod.

Well I replaced my pedestal o-rings both upper and lower this weekend. 5 hours...that was a PITA. While I had the turbo out I installed the Superior Compressor wheel and I love it! But...... I still have my oil leak. Oil puddling in the valley and running down the back of the motor. Could I have messed up installing the o-rings?? The lower ones were pretty straight forward... don't think I messed those up. The upper ones were more tricky, trying to slide the turbo back there without pinching the o-rings was tricky. I don't see any oil by the HPOP and the braided lines from the HPOP to the heads are dry..... HELP!!! LOL

Yes, more than likely your pedestal O rings are still leaking.
I recommend you purchase oversized O rings from KCMdieselperformance to ensure a good seal.

I followed your advise earlier and bought the oversized o-rings. Do I understand right that the stock ones from Ford are yellow? and the oversized ones are black? I bought this vehicle used, when I replaced the o-rings, the lower ones were yellow and really smashed. The upper ones were black and didn't look as deformed.

Stock rings are yellow and black.
Oversized are just black.
First I have ever heard of a pedestal leak after installing the oversized O rings. Is it possible they were not seated correctly? shifted or pinched during the install?

Check the forum for "found my oil leak" from strokin_it. He posted yesterday with the same problem. Could be what yours is too.

At this point I would say anything is possible. I really thought I got it sealed properly though. The lower ones I thought were pretty straight forward. I took some fresh oil and put it in the cap from the oil bottle then soaked the o-rings in the oil. This helped hold them in place when I set them into the groove on the block. I placed the bolts in the pedestal before lowering it so that I could make sure it was lined up before I set in in place. It went straight down. I would think if I messed any of them up, it might have been the upper ones. Although, I carefully placed the turbo in place, then was able to lift it slightly straight up and make sure that the o-rings were still in the right place before I put it back down and bolted in place.

I read that last night about 9pm my time. Was out under the hood in my pajamas checking that! My fitting back there is dirty.... but not wet. The plugs on the back of the head are dry also. I also checked the backside of the fuel filter just in case it might be diesel leaking and not oil.... that is dry also.
