oil pan magnet

This is just a thought: We all know of the magnet in the auto transmission pan that collects all the shavings and gunk, etc., that's running wild in the fluid.
What do you all think about a big strong flat, round magnet about the size of a large grapefruit being stuck on the side of the oil pan. do you think it would pick up and hold the particles thru the pan until you got ready to change oil, at which time you would remove the magnet and drain the oil.

is there any pros or cons to this thinking are am i thinking like a grapefruit?

Wink

Something's wrong with your idea - there's too much common sense involved.....

I think it'd be better to use a magnet on the oil filter, that way you would know all the metal particles were removed from the engine with a filter change. When you drain the oil from the pan it doesn't drain 100% of the oil, and is very possible that it could leave junk in the pan.

Yep, mine's magnetic.

But.........
There shouldn't be that much ferrous metal in the crankcase of a healthy, broke in engine like there is in an automatic transmission. I did detect a spun bearing in one of my 460's once through a magnetic drain plug, saving me a potential roadside breakdown and block window. But if your engine is shedding enough ferrous metal in the oil for it to be a problem, you're probably going to be getting a new one fairly soon anyway, whether you plan to or not.

Good point. That metal would have to come from somewhere.
