Is there a clean, spill proof way to drain the radiator? In working on my truck, I am needing to drain the radiator occasionally. I am using a bucket to catch the coolant, but there has got to be a cleaner way. I don't like making a mess in the street in frount of my house. Any ideas?
Hose down the spilled coolant afterward, never leave it out for animals to get into. Use the leftover coolant for topping off radiators after you have strained it thru a rag in a funnel. Dump the old coolant you don't keep in the toilet. The "bugs" at the sewer plant love the stuff, -tastes like sugar to them too.
Use a hose that fits over the petcock on the radiator snugly, run it down to your clean bucket and drain away. If you have a sharp turn to make at the rad you can sometimes use a spark plug boot on the drain **** and then adapt it to your drain hose. Dennis is right, if you have time leave the cap on while your draining, it slows the process down but minimizes the mess (start the night before!!!) But man, Ive been a pro tech for 16 years and STILL make a mess sometimes, its almost unavoidable, but at least your TRYING!!!!!!!!!! Have fun, JW
