today i had a little time with my truck. i noticed that at idle i was putting out 12 volts. the harder the gas was hit it fly off the meter to over 16 not sure how much over? this is not right is it. my battery goes dead sometimes. and it a brand new optima. 3 altenators have been tried. should i buy a new voltage regulator. i was told to clean everything including the mounting bolts on the regulator beacuse they ground it. i did not have the time today. but it sounds like that might not be the problem. is there a difference between the two regulators they offer i think one is electronic. i have mallory ignition and all its components i was think of spending the money on the exspensive one...
i would have gone with a new vr before i went with 3 new alternators. try not to get the 78 and up style. they are electronic. the 73-75 use transistors and are a little more reliable.
i will! this battery is under warranty i pay nothing for 2 years. so is there elctrinic vr's and non electronic? i will shoot for a motorcraft. do they carry them at the dealer still?
ok you wrote that. while i was writing. i wont get a electronic. i tried the vr out of 72 and it didnt work i believe. we will see i thought it was bad all along also.
Don't shoot me! I've seen GM alternators on old fords before due to charging problems. Internal VR and all with less wires to get bad cantacts. If it means reliability I would put a piece of GM in my ford. Kind of makes mt stomach churn just thinking of it.
Recheck the wiring from the alternator to the Voltage regulator to the solenoid, maybe something got hooked up wrong. Check with Uncle Mil1ion for alternator/VR wiring schematic.
it is possible my friend hooked up the wires on the back of the altenator wrong, i asked him and he was not sure where they went. i was going to do it but he jumped right in and mixed things up. i am buying a new regulator and checking the wires. then i will clean up all contacts.
