well today it hit me how much my truck sucks gas. the tank leaks from somewhere and i am running it on a 1 gallon can, down the mountain is 2.1 miles same with up i drove it to the bus stop (bottom of mountain) and then when i got home drove it back up. had about a 5 min warm up period in the morning and tonight. when i got home i pulled the can and it was darn near empty. it is running pretty rich (aint had time to adjust it sence i rebuilt the carb) and my bed is full of snow and some wood and im running 3.50s with 32s but i didnt think it would be that bad. i really need to adjust the floats and idle misture screws becuase when i was gettin my truck out of the snow i blew a good hole in my manifold and every time i would go down a hill and let off the gas it would be back fireing like crazy.
First with the engine off, check and repair all vacuum leaks and vacuum lines (check the pcv valve). Make sure your choke on the carburator is working properly. Then, turn in the idle mixture screws all the way in (do not over tighten the idle mix. screws) and turn counter clockwise out 1 1/2 turns. Start the engine and adjust the idle on carb. With the engine running, back out air mixture screw 1/4 turn each at one time (the key is back out each mix. screw evenly) and till you reached a smooth idle and a good carb response when you rev the engine suddenly. If you loose count on either mix screw, you'll need to start over. If the truck was previously blowing black smoke out of the exhaust, you probably need to change the spark plugs, remove and inspect the spark plugs. Recheck the timing and replace the filters (air, fuel, crankcase).
It's all uphill for you:
Fix the exhaust leak.
Adjust the carb-once if the exhaust leak is fixed, or once after the exhaust leak is fixed.
Get the choke open ASAP
Run a block heater
Oh yeah, get a bigger gas can for tuning. You need the motor at operating temp before you can do much of anything.
That 2 1/2 miles per trip is what's killing you. I doubt the engine is even at operating temp when you shut-down.
well the exhaust leak aint hard to find at all, its a 2"X2" chunk blowin out of the manifold. i have a manual choke and dont use it becasue it is a pain in the butt, and after about 3 cranks its ideling so i just deal with crankin it a few times. also i think another thing that is killing me is the gears, i really need 4.11s becuase coming up switch backs with about 45* angles that thing is a dog unless you have momentum and are in 1st. oh ya and i cant hear my radio even with it cranked up. i think its time for a set of headers.
A leak exhaust will deprive your engine from running at it's full potential. Fix those exhaust leaks and you will notice a difference on you fuel usuage, guaranteed. Make sure the choke is fully open, a half closed choke will foul your spark plugs and decrease fuel mileage.
