What are these studs?

There are 4 studs on each side of my 390, they look like they screw into the exhaust port of the head. Each one has a nut on it that appears to do nothing. Here is a pic, they are just below the valve cover http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f2...2-15-06003.jpg

Thermactor tubes that look like they have been remeoved and plugged. This was old smog stuff started back in 66. Heads without them had short plugs installed in the holes from the factory.

I've seen many C8AE and D2TE heads without the holes, but the "boss" that would be drilled if it was thermactor was still there, including the "hump" in the exhaust port
