Dipstick in deep doo-doo

My dipstick (oil) was beheaded a while back by an exploding serpentine belt. I had it "useable" until the next oil change. In my haste to return it to its tube upon checking the oil, it slid too far down to grab. This has expedited my oil change plans. My question is, how hard is it to remove the tube to get at it?

Thanks,
Geoff

How far down in the tube is the end? If you know a nurse or doctor you can use a pair of hemostates and reach down fairly far and pull it out. If that dont work, I think dropping the oil pan will get you to it. I don't know what is involved in pulling the tube itself out. I'm sure one of the Gurus here can answer that one.

Whatever you do, don't unscrew the large brass nut on the side of the oil pan. You'll lose stuff in the oil pan then you'll really know what doo-doo is.
You can unbolt the dipstick tube from the block, pull up and the tube will come out of the pan assembly. The tube connection with the large brass nut will remain untouched.

I thought that might be it, Old Fart. I wasn't sure how far up the tube the oil might be. That is why I was waiting for an oil change.

As for the magnet, the tube is steel. The collar on the dipstick is plastic. I tried some medical equipment (I'm not a doctor, I just play one on the net...) but the collar is roughly the same diameter as the tube.

By the way, dipsticks are about $25 from Ford.
