79 f150, bone stock 351m, 2wd. Recently, at random my truck stalls out. It always happens when I am moving (not at idle). Once it stalls I have to wait about ten minutes before it will start again. It turns over fine, but it won't start. The carb was rebuilt about 25,000 miles ago. Today it stalled again, but it blew off a hose on the back of the intake that fits into a three-holed tree that screws into the intake. That could just be a random coincidence, but it might be related some how. Any help or advice on what the problem is would be really helpful. I love this truck and I want to get her well so we can get back on the road.
Random stalling and delayed starting sounds like the Durafart ignition module. You can buy a replacement unit at most auto parts retailers. Blowing a hose off the vacuum tree sounds like a backfire and could be related to the ignition system cutting out when the motor stalls. I would first replace the module, if it’s not it at least you have a spare for when it does go out.
i had the same trouble...i tried everything...including the ignition module....mine wound up being the coil....it was possessed, it seemed....just did it at random....but try that, too
I replaced the fuel filter at the carb, and I also installed an inline filter at the rubber hose before the fuel pump. I soon noticed gunk in the glass filter and figured that fixed it, but I stalled the other day. I then went to NAPA and bought thier version of a performance coil for $30 and that seemed to fix it. No regrets about the filters though because they really do stop any gunk. If it happens again I am going to replace the fuel pump.
