Hi guys, on my 92 Eddie Bauer 4.0L 2WD, when I drive it if my suspension lifts up when it returns I hear a weird noise.
Sounds like a spring coil is being compressed.
Don't know if it's plastic rubbing against something, but can't pinpoint the problem.
Any help is appreciated. This noise is not always, but really bothers me when I hit a series of potholes. Thanks.
I would crawl under the rear and check the condition of the spings and exhaust. Look for cracks/breaks in the coils. Also has the exhaust been replaced recently? They may have not bent it correctly in the back and it is banging on the floor.
With my van as an example, it is the springs you are probably listening to. If you crawl under the van and look at where the coils meet the 'body', there will probably be some rubber/plastic working its way out. This allows the noise and additional play to transmit through due to the metal-to-metal contact. I'm going to try to find some rubber to wrap mine with - sometime!
They do make a lot of noise.
I can see a rubber gasket on bottom of the springs.
But it looks fine.
Is this the only one or does the upper area have another?
Maybe I can troubleshoot by spraying some WD-40 on the rubber itself and see if it dies down for a few minutes. I will try and do this tonight and get back to you guys.
Thanks for the help!
Mine has some on the tops that have pretty much worked their way out. The right is worse than the left, and I have NO insulation left to mute the noise!
Finally did it, sprayed Silicone Lube and it died down for a while.
After the rains it came back
At least now I know, this'll be a trip to the suspension shop then, but there's other important things right now to do like the coolant flush.
Thanks for the advise!
Glad it worked for you, if just temporarily. At least the problem is 'solved'. I have much bigger fish to reel in, as I can't fry them yet... Something let loose in my engine last week, so my van is currently down. Should I throw in one of my 289's??!!
