Quick question about non-op registration...

Good morning gentlemen. What does it take to get a truck out of non-op registration status? Do I have to go through a safety check (lights - horn - etc) or do I just go and re-register it?

I can pick up a tasty '73 F-250 for $200.00 that's supposedly running - and non-op'd.

Thanks for your help.

That would happen to be a Quick California related question.

Maybe check the MVO Web site for California.

I would suspect it requires a safety inspection by a Licensed Mechanic.

This would be the same for ANY year truck, just not the 73-79's.

Maybe general automotive discussion forum would be better ?

In California we do not have safety inspections. Only smog checks. For a non-op all you do is fill out the form indicating that you will not be driving the truck on the roads. It is a reduced fee. The DMV website (under the CA.gov website ) can give you more details.

I'm a member of the Northern California Chapter. I'll try there.

Thanks for the help.

mine was non opted for 6 years. you simply pay the 5.00 fee up front which keeps the paperwork current. then you can simply reregister it at anytime. just pay the current registration and tag fee. mine was 140.00. but you will also have tax of 16.00 on top of that.

Good luck with your truck.

Just so you know, No offence meant.

The Quote feature on FTE is for users who need to point out select information from the post ..then to reply to certain aspects of the post.

The Quote doesn't need to be used on One on One or One on Two conversations.
All it does is cause more work for people reading and add unecessary Length to a thread.

Addressing the post to someone works every bit as good as Posting the quote.

Ther are way too many people using the quote feature uncessarily.

My 2 cents

Flame away

First...I would never "flame" anyone.

Second...how do I "address" a response to someone? I've been here for a while but I'm always open to suggestions. Can you please guide me?

Call the DMV at 1 (800) 777-0133 and give them the license plate # of the truck and they will tell you exactly what needs to be done to register it.. Since it's a 73 you won't have to smog it.. You do need to put insurance on it and pay the fees.. If there is any late fees before the non-op status, you will have to pay those..

Like I said.. call the DMV and they will tell you exactly what you have to do.

Thanks for the advice. I'll do just that.

Have a great evening.

Here in WI. if the title hasen't been sent in for salvage (depending on where your getting the truck, junkyard or someones backyard) then you just have to regester it as normal. But if it has been then you have to go through all the inspection BS.
