A voluntary recall of about 288,000 passenger car and light truck tires -- some produced in Findlay -- was announced Monday by Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.
Concerns about slow leaks and cracking in the tires prompted the recall.
Owners of the recalled tires have been warned to avoid driving at highway speeds until the tires have been inspected and replaced.
Cooper Tire will replace the tires for free.
Pat Brown, a Cooper Tire spokesperson, said Monday there have been no reported crashes or injuries linked to the recalled tires. She said the recalled tires account for a small percentage of the 40 million tires the company produces annually.
About 183,000 of the tires, manufactured in a couple of production runs between February 2004 and late January 2006, are being recalled because of sidewall cracking discovered during Cooper surveillance tests.
Used on pickups and sport utility vehicles, these tire models include the Cooper Discoverer S/T; Dean Mud Terrain Radial SXT; Durango Radial XTR; Mastercraft Courser C/T; Dick Cepek Radial F-C II; Mesa C/T; Pro Comp Xtreme A/T; and Tempra Trailcutter Radial RT.
"We have a very rigorous method of inspection and our surveillance detected this condition," Brown said.
Brown said these 183,000 recalled tires were made by Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co., a Chinese company that supplies radial truck and passenger tires to Cooper.
Brown said an additional 101,000 tires used on passenger cars, which were made from November 2004 to July 2005, have been recalled because of a slow leak which may have been caused by contaminant in the upper sidewall.
These tires include the Dean Alpha 365 A/S; Mastercraft A/S; Starfire Flite-line IV; and Trendsetter SE.
Cooper's manufacturing plant in Albany, Ga., produced these tires.
In addition, more than 3,000 of the Cooper Zeon 2XS and Mastercraft Avenger ZHP tires are being recalled because of sidewall cracking. These tires were manufactured in Findlay. For more information about the recall, call 1-800-854-6288.
Sorry to hear about the recall but at least Copper's being upfront about it. I'm been using Mastercraft tires (made by Cooper) for years and they're a great tire for a very reasonable price.
You don't know if the recall will be global by any chance?
The reason I ask is because I think the guy that bought my F350 might be a little interested... (it had Cooper Discover S/T's on it when I sold it)
It didn't have any concerns with slow leaks though - held a constant 80psi - which I checked weekly (one of the things I am **** about is tire pressure).
