he had licenses, and paid more than the required fee. he was issued a migratory bird stamp instead of the upland gamebird stamp. so he sent in the $7. i was shot in a hunting accident when i was 16. i know accidents happen everyday afield in the US. it was a bad deal and i'd say the same if it were al gore. the man shot was joking about it with dr.s yesterday

I recall a story from years ago about John Wayne. It seems he was bird hunting with a new shotgun when he accidentally shot friend Ward Bond in the back. When Wayne visited his buddy at the hospital, he asked, "Would you mind rolling over? I want to see how the new gun patterned."

So if this had been reverse, would the secret service agents have shot the lawyer friend before he shot the VP?

Everyone should know were the other person is,you dont look around you when a bird flys, you pull up, follow, and shoot.thats why you walk a line,if someone dosnt follow this rule you or they can get hurt, one of the first times I went ring neck huntin I got pepperd from my brother and it hurt, but it was my fault,I got ahead on the line,LESSON LEARND.that was 30 yrs ago.Cheeny has been bird huntin along time,he is very aware of this.
Cheeny did not shoot the guy,He got pepperd from a shot Cheeny made.BIG differance.
one big reason to were eye protection when upland bird huntin.

You are responsible for what you shoot. Cheney goofed up, plain and simple. Did the other guy share some of the fault? Yes, but the VP fired a gun without knowing where the guy was. I heard that the friend had left the group earlier and when he came back, didn't let them know he was there. Obviously, it was an accident, but, again, one that could have- and should have- been avoided.

It's been a media circus here for the last two days...

Come on, the guy got peppered from 30 yds away with BIRDSHOT. Get some tweezers, some iodine, and call it a day. I think I could do more permanent damage to him with a pellet gun at 30 yards.

Sheesh, the guy has been in ICU for 3 days? Does he have underlying conditions to warrant this??

The media needs to just STOP. This is a non-story, plain straight accident!

The shooter is the only one that pulls the trigger.

I grew up "bird" hunting, and know the rules well.

The first rule is to know where your partner is at all times!

I can't tell you how many birds I let fly without shooting because I did't know exactly where my partner was. If not, you pass the shot to the partner on the covey rise!!! (Even both partners have let birds fly because neither knew the location of the other.

This is an incredible sport, but you must have honed skills to practice safely.

Cheney obviously made a bad decision in pulling his trigger.

I'm sure Cheney is personally miserable about this incident.

(I hope they had only two men on the ground. In quail hunting, more than two with guns is a crowd!!!)

I'm just glad everyone is going to be OK.

AND, just glad the dog wasn't shot..PETA would have a field day!

munkey, great post. it was a bad shot. he got a lawyer.(maybe a good shot). thought the guy is 70'ish, please, people keep in mind it was a 28 ga. @ a long distance for that shotgun. it was stupid shot, but the "vic" didn't announce his presence back on the shooting line as he should have. & cheany shouldn't have taken the shot. it happens on bird hunts TOO often. thank GOD it wasn't a death, but the feeding freenzy is just nuts

Monkey Im afraid to say your wrong....even though he was shooting bird shot, 30 yards wouldnt do much damage to the back or chest or arms but when your shooting at the face, where there are eyes(soft tissue) the bird shot could very well do some damage. Plus Measurements in the media arent always accurate so who knows how close/far he was. I must say he is lucky cheny had a 28 guage, i own one myself, use it for the very same reason QUAIL, but if heda had a twelve guage with a long brass shell (Winchester SuperX Mark 5) heda had a lot more to deal with. I wouldnt be laughing about it if the guy was seriously hurt....but cheney needs to take some hunters ed and maybe hit the range for a proper lesson in shooting. I havent payed much attention to the news since yesterday......i got my laugh....but i agree with all of yall it was and shouldve been prevented. Cheney and him both are lucky i wasnt the game warden....ida been writin em tickets for everything you can think of. They can do that you know.

Well the guy who was shot, just had a heart attack.

Also, Cheney got off with a warning about the stamp.

I was mis-informed about my earlier comments, the news at 5 am had it wrong.
