Wire problem
My son has a Bronco2 (86?) he went to the bank & it ran fine. He came out & it will not start. We traced the problem to a burnt wire that hooks to the starter solonid<sp> on the fender. It is 10 gauge black with a orange stripe(fuesable link). we chased it to the fuse block. I cannot tell what it goes to, any ideas?
Some back ground: When I hook a test light to the solonid where the positive batt. cable goes it will not light up, when I remove the blk/orange wire from the positive post, the test light lights up.when I hook the suspect wire back up it goes out. When I have the wire unhooked it will not start.

The EVTM for my 87 shows the black/orange splices to the ignition switch, fuse block & alternator.
See what it does when you remove the black/orange from the alternator. Might be a shorted diode in the alternator.

When I unhooked all wires from the alternator it made no diff.
Let me go back to the start. It has no juice anywhere. No accesorys,lights anything. The batt. is in good charge. When I put a test light to the post on the solonid<sp> that the positive batt, cable goes to there was nothing. I unhooked everything that was on the pos. solonid post & got my test light to light up.I then started adding terminals back one at a time untill the light went out. That was the blk/orange wire. I can hold test test light on the solonid term. & when I touch the blk/org wire it goes out, when I remove it it lights back up. This tells me that is the suspect wire correct?
I then unplugged all connections from the steering column & it will still not light up. I tried to wiggle & look to see if there were any pinched wire but cannot find any. Any ideas where to go next?

The only unfused accesories that my wiring diagram shows BK/O are wired to is the alternator & the main headlight switch on the dash.
Have you checked the wiring to the headlight switch? I've read that the connector to this switch can melt & short out.

I took the wiring connector off the headlight switch, same results only with a whole new problem now. When I pulled the connector off the headlight switch, 3 wires came unplugged from the connector! I do not know where they came from either. I seemed to have power for a second today, at least the buzzers where buzzing & when I turned the key over to try starting it made a click then went to nothing again. That leads me think it must be in the ignition switch?

Does the horn work? BK/O is also wired to the fuse for the horn.
This is for an 87 BTW, dont know if yours is the same.
I show 3 fuse links spliced together & solid yellow is the main power feed to the ignition switch.
If the horn works, but theres no voltage to the ignition switch, check that solid yellow wire.

I changed my settings. I found the power problem!!!!! it was the positive battery cable! the power came back to the accesorys today & when I would try to start it, the starter relay would click.After a bit the noticed the positive cable to the relay was getting warm so I unhooked the cable & put jumper cables from the batt to the relay & it fired up. Now I have just got to figgure out which wires go the where in the headlight switch
