Smile starting fresh

Hello I just purchaced a 1975 f-100 custom. Down the road it runs fine but is very sluggish/coughs and sputters and sometimes dies on take off from stop signs, but will idle fine in gear but try to accelerate and its a battle. I am going to give a complete full tune up tomorrow even though all components look to be newer i would just feel better. What I am wondering is where the timing should be set. its all stock automatic trans truck. any help or suggestions would be great Thanks

What is the engine size? automatic or manual transmission?

My understanding is that timing specs vary...but a good rule of thumb is 8 to 12 degrees. I'd suggest you start at 8 and work your way up until you find the ideal setting.

As for the take-off problems...check your accelerator pump. It sounds like you've got a problem there, considering that it will idle and run good at speed.

Hope this helps.

Jim

Make sure to replace the ignition point and condenser within the distributor, then reset timing.

Are you sure it's a 390 and not a 360 ?

My books shows 12* BTDC for a 390 2bbl.

It doesn't mention disconnecting the vaccum line and plugging & at what rpm though..

I have a 1975 F100 with a 2 barrel 390 and auto tranny. Sticker on my valve cover says timing should be 6btc @ 650rpm.

My 1975 had point - condenser ignition system. Pop off the clip on distributor cap, and remove the distributor cap to do a visual inspection.

That's right 1975,It's because it's a 75.

Ford can change things like timing on the same engine depending on what they did to it .....every year.

The timing setting in One year doesn't mean the same setting is used in another,

That's why we always run into this note: Check the label on the engine valve cover .

This is why when I see people who assume it's the same they are misleading people.

In this tune-up book I am reading from it has listing for 4 390's

2-2v
2-4v

Only one states to look at the label.
The timing for the 2-4v 390's is : 14* BTDC & 15* BTDC

So, The best way to go is with the original Label.

If the label is missing, it's anybody's guess.

Oh ya,

This is also why the HP & Torque ratings are missing from books for the 351M & 400's.
Because of the constant change by Ford

So why did I think it was a 76 ?

Well, all the 75's listed in this book state to read the label for the timing value.

The Carb idle mixtire screws should already be set at the starting point.

Usually 1 1/2 turns out from seated.
