Put in 4hi first eh? So I am removing the entire plate that the motor is attached to...not removing the motor from the plate...gotcha. Wish I had pics....thanks...t
Bumping to top...snow in forecast tomorrow..so I'm dicking around with it in garage.
I pulled the gearmotor encoder assbly off.....
Put it in 4hi with motor off..the motor makes noise in increments..trys 4 or 5 times to do its thing.....BUT....the part that looks like it is supposed to move the transfer case doowap.....doesn't move at all.
The big motor is the one making noise.....there is another electrical wire that connects on the opposite end.....it appears to be the "innie" that goes on the "outie" that is on the transfer case.....it doesn't rotate..it's supposed to I'm sure.
When you removed the entire servo assembly, there is an obvious "motor" on it, but on the other "end" so to speak is the switch that says it's in 4x4 hi, lo, or 2-wheel.
Is that what you're talking about?
Sounds like you might be better off just getting the entire assembly new or from a junkyard. Especially if it's not doing anything when it's not on the transfer case.
yes.....that is what I'm talking about....the motor trys to engage..it makes noise....it buzzes..stops...buzzes...stops 3 times....and then there is a hum....but the other thing...the switch doesn't move the insides to try and move the transfer case.
Should I be able to turn the transfer case by hand or DON'T DO THAT?
Thanks!
That assembly is called the gearmotor encoder asbly just like beast12 said correct?

I wouldn't mess with the transfer case unless you know you can put it back where it was exactly.
If the motor isn't turning the "doohickey" when it's disconnected from the transfer case, I'd say just replace it, unless you're the adventurous type like me
Yes, I believe it's called the "gearmotor encoder assembly". If you do get a new one, you might have to move the switch from the old one to the new one.
The only experience I have is with a 96 chevy half ton, but I think the encoder motors are very similar based on the research I did back then.
When my encoder motor went bad, it would put it in 4lo, but not 4hi. I ended up buying a remanufactured aftermarket unit for about 1/2 the price of a new gm one. While I had the motor off, I used a wrench and "selected" 4hi and 4lo. When I did, you could hear the front axle actuator engaging (probably front hubs for you). So in my case, I could activate 4wd manually with the motor off the transfer case. The encoder motor had a metal "hole" that slipped over a "****" on the transfer case. I was able to use an adjustable wrench to turn the **** very easily. It had notches for each selection (2hi, 4hi, 4lo). Just mark where the **** is so that you can put it back in the same place.

The principal is the same, but in reality, quite different.
One thing I forgot to mention is, go to the local auto parts store and see if they can get it first BEFORE trying Ford.
Thanks! I plan to take it apart...I know I know...but I am a curious sort and I'm dying to see what failed......the wire clips are a bitch I know that! Any tips on how not to break them...sheesh they are tough.
