you could remove the shift motor and engage it manually to help isoloate it as the problem. You can pick one up on ebay for a pretty reasonable price if you have to replace it

I'm still not sure which motor is the shift motor...I'm fairly certain it is on the passenger side of the transfer case....but not positive...there appears to be 2 motors on on each side..not sure what the other one is....snow coming today.....ugh

If I put the tc is 4hi manually after removing the motor.....and leave the hubs in auto....and leave the dash switch on 2hi......the front driveline will turn but the front axles will not is that correct?

Something has to hold it in gear, you don't want it jumping out on it's own.

Are we talking about a '99-up Superduty? There's only one motor on it, from memory, it's right on the back of it, pretty close to center.

Don't know if it's possible to shift and keep it there, doubt it.

By taking off the servo, you can figure out if it's working or not.

That's the one!

There are two connectors on the transfer case, the one in the picture right on the servo, and another one above the servo, which is the switch that tells the GEM module that it's really in 4x4.

Disconnect the connector to the switch and check the contacts, just in case this is your problem.

Test.

Then, remove servo and see if it's stuck or something (try turning to 4x4HI with servo removed from the transfer case, and servo wiring connected). See what it does.

Ok..it snowed today and I hadn't done anything yet...so I pulled it into my garage..slid underneath and tried to attack it. Keep in mine i haven't worked on my own vehicle since my71 Duster waaaay back when...so no jokes!

My skid plate is in the way...and my exhause pipe is HOT....so you know what happened...after I got over that hump I tried to reach the motor without taking off the skid plate......those aren't phillips heads...they are torx yes? I dont' have that friggin tool in that friggin size..anyone know what size it is? Sheesh....

In the meantime I decided to remove the skid plate so that part would be done...the d.mn bolts are friggin metric!!! On a ford? I told you it has been awhile....anyway...I got nothing done.....so I'll try again tomorrow, with a cooled off truck and new tools....

sheesh....any more tips?

Everything's Metric now

Yes, they are Torx. I would just get a complete set - if you plan on working on this thing, chances are you'll find more Torx bolts.

If you really have a problem buying a complete set, let me know, I'll crawl underneath and see what size fits it.

OK, can't find my service CD, and the torx screws holding the motor on are T-20

HOWEVER... when I said "remove the motor" I didn't mean unscrew just the motor, but the entire piece the motor is connected to, complete with the switch.

I don't know now, after looking at it.

Anyone else with a service manual that can tell us what it says about removing the shift motor? In the meantime, I'll keep looking for mine.
